Eligible Students -

Students must have completed eighth grade and be recommended for placement by their local school district.  Eligible students are generally those students who are considered to be at risk of not graduating from high school and who can be described as being one or more of the following:

- behind the normal credit track

- achieving one or more years below grade placement

- failing one or more subjects

- chronic truant - excessive absences or tardiness

- low self-esteem and/or social development 

- school drop-out/potential drop-out

- chronological age two or more years above normal grade

 

Students cannot be placed in this program if they are currently suspended or expelled.  If students are placed who have an IEP the local district is responsible for providing IEP services.

Participating Districts- Astoria, Avon, Canton, Cuba, Farmington, Lewistown, Valley and V.I.T.

Hours -

Spoon River Academy at McCall - 8:30 a.m. until 2:50 p.m.

Spoon River Academy at Spoon River College - 10:30 a.m. until 4:10 p.m.

Curriculum - An individualized, self-paced program is used as the basic program.
Graduation - Students are required to earn the same total number of credits as would be required by their home school district with a minimum of 24 credits.  Students are eligible to graduate from their local high school and may participate in local graduation ceremonies (unless restricted by a local school decision).
Transportation - Transportation may be provided by the local district to Spoon River Academy at McCall but transportation will not be provided for students attending Spoon River Academy at Spoon River College.

Placement -

 

Students must complete an application at their local high school.  The local high school will contact the director to discuss the potential placement of the student prior to any decision being made.  A meeting date will be set to explain the program to the student and parents and if they elect to be placed to establish a starting date.  The local school will supply the alternative program with:

- the student application

- student transcript

-current physical exam and immunization record

- copy of birth certificate

We offer an open invitation to local school district staff members and administrators to visit the alternative school programs and to maintain an active involvement with students from that district.  We consider these students to still be a member of the student body of their local high school.
