The Regional Office of Education #22 is urging all Fulton and Schuyler County educators to be sure that their Illinois teaching certificates are currently registered. On August 26, 2011 Public Act 097-0607 was signed into law by Governor Quinn. This new law significantly changes when a teaching certificate is to be considered "lapsed." The new law requires a certificate to be lapsed six months after the last registration year. Thus, a certificate that had a registration due date of June 30, 2012 is given a grace period of six months (until December 31, 2012) for the educator to renew and register the certificate. An educator may not teach in any position requiring certification under a lapsed certificate. To reinstate the lapsed certificate, the educator is now required to either complete nine semester college credit hours in an area of endorsement on their certificate or pay a $500.00 penalty fee in lieu of the coursework. The Regional Office of Education #22 urges all educators to know the status of their certificate(s) including when they require renewal or registration. Educators may verify their credentials through the Illinois State Board of Education's Educator Certification System at www.isbe.net/ecs or by contacting ROE #22 at 309-508-8029.
